For many college athletes, balancing one sport with classes can feel overwhelming.
But for Central Penn College student athlete Darwin Cruz, balancing four sports while working and managing academic responsibilities has become the essence of his formula for success.
Cruz landed at Central Penn in 2024 after graduating from Mount Carmel Area High School in Northumberland County. He quickly became known for his competitive spirit and versatility, competing in basketball, baseball, soccer and cross-country, an uncommon accomplishment for any athlete.
Cruz said one of the main reasons he chose Central Penn was the school’s small environment and the opportunity to build close relationships with professors and coaches.
“I like how there are fewer students, so I can be closer to my teachers,” Cruz said.
Another factor was the arrival of new coaches in the athletics program. Cruz felt that a fresh coaching staff created an equal opportunity for every athlete to earn playing time.
“There were no favorites,” he said. “It was about talent and hard work.”
Started early
Although Cruz now excels across multiple sports, his athletic journey was not always straightforward. Born in the Dominican Republic, he briefly played baseball as a child before his family moved to Queens, in New York City. He stepped away from the sport due to the financial challenges and limited opportunities associated with youth baseball in the city.
“I started playing baseball when I was eight,” Cruz said, “but in New York, baseball was expensive and everyone wanted to play.”
Cruz found his footing in basketball through the YMCA while developing interests in music production and graphic design. During his junior year of high school, he returned to baseball and rediscovered his passion for the game.
Today, Cruz maintains a demanding schedule that reflects his commitment on and off the field. His typical day begins with morning classes before transitioning into workouts, assignments and work shifts that often stretch into the evening. Despite the pressure of balancing athletics, academics and employment, Cruz embraces the challenge.
“I love to compete,” he said. “Everything I do is competitive for me.”
That mindset has kept him motivated even through difficult seasons. While Central Penn’s teams are building toward more successes, Cruz believes effort and determination matter every day. One of his proudest moments came during the basketball team’s first win of the season. Cruz said the experience revealed the team’s potential and reinforced the importance of every player’s contribution.
Sports also taught Cruz valuable lessons that extend far beyond athletics. Through managing four sports alongside personal responsibilities, he has developed discipline, time-management skills and persistence.
“I can do more than one thing at a time,” Cruz said. “I’m never going to be stuck, because I’m always going to have something to work toward.”
Into the future
Cruz is a business administration major, and he hopes to help support his family’s businesses, including his sister’s catering venture in New York. He is also considering a future in video editing or media production, driven by his longstanding passion for graphic design and creative work.
As he continues building his future at Central Penn, Cruz hopes other students and athletes see him as approachable and supportive.
“Don’t be afraid to come talk to me,” he said. “I’m a friendly guy. If you need help with anything, I’ll help however I can.”
Whether competing on the basketball court, guarding the goal in soccer, running cross-country or stepping up to the plate in baseball, Cruz has established himself as one of Central Penn College’s most dedicated and versatile student-athletes.
