Three Students honored as 2018 Athletes of the Year

Central Penn College recognized a woman’s basketball player and two members of the baseball team as athletes of the year for the 2017-2018 season at a ceremony held today at The Conference Center.

Sophomore Ja’lynn Burton was named Female Athlete of the Year. The Harrisburg native averaged 24 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, playing guard for the Knights women’s basketball team. She also earned Academic All-American status.

“Ja’lynn really blossomed this year,” said Athletic Director Dave Baker. “She brought her ‘A’ game every game, inspiring her teammates to do the same.”

Baseball players Jerry Biller III and Brandon Casiano shared the Male Athlete of the Year honors. The second-year Biller batted .386, knocked in 20 runs, and stole 15 bases, which ranked him ninth in the conference. A graduate of Brandon High School in Brandon, Fla., he also was an Academic All-American.

“Jerry does so many things well, from batting to fielding to running the bases. He plays smart and he plays hard. That’s a great combination,” said Baker, who also serves as the college’s retention officer.

Casiano batted .364 and scored 17 runs in 23 games. The senior outfielder, also an Academic All-American, is a graduate of Passaic County Technical Institute in Passaic, NJ.

“Brandon had an excellent career both on and off the field at Central Penn. He’s been one of the pillars of the program for the last few years, and we wish him well, as he begins the next phase of his journey,” said Baker.
